WHAT IS EWI?

External Wall Insulation is a type of weatherproof insulation that is applied to the side of your solid wall property. Solid wall homes let out twice as much heat as cavity wall properties, by applying the insulation layer you are not only protecting your home, but also your energy bills.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

EWI is often refferred to as a system, relating to the three components that work together - the insulation material, the fixing of framework and the finishing layer which is waterproof and aestechically pleasing, available in a wide range of colours and finishing textures.

HOW CAN I TELL IF MY PROPERTY IS SOLID WALL?

A couple of quick, simple checks will let you know if your home is a solid wall property, or cavity wall.

If your home is made of brick and the brickwork follows a long-short-long pattern then the property has solid walls. If, due to a render for example, you are unable to see the brick pattern, then you can measure the wall thickness at an entrance or window. A solid wall will measure approximatley 22cm, a cavity wall between 27cm and 30cm and a stone wall 50cm and above.

If in any doubt, check the age of your property - any house built before the late 1920's is highly unlikely to have a cavity wall.
